Actos (Pioglitazone) Adverse Reactions
Actos litigation is currently focused on patients who suffer from bladder cancer as a result of taking the defective medication. The drug did not initially carry a warning to patients that they were at increased risk of bladder cancer so many patients were exposed to heightened risk without knowing it.
Actos Side Effects
Actos and other drugs in the class of drugs known as thiazolidinediones (such as Avandia) have other dangerous side effects in addition to bladder cancer. These drugs have been linked to eye problems (macular degeneration), liver problems, renal failure and congestive heart failure. Women who have taken Actos for a prolonged period may experience bone fractures in the bones of the arms, hands and feet.
Be Aware of These Symptoms
- Congestive Heart Failure: Actos can cause or worsen congestive heart failure. Patients are advised to report excessive and rapid weight gain, shortness of breath and edema (swelling). Patients who are already suffering from heart failure should not be prescribed Actos.
- Liver Problems: In the early stages, liver disease may have no symptoms or a number of vague symptoms that are not clearly related to the liver, such as fatigue, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. As the condition worsens, patients may notice jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), itching and bruising. In its late stages, liver disease leads to renal failure.
- Rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure: Rhabdomyolysis is a rare condition that causes a buildup of myoglobin in the bloodstream. Myoglobin is toxic to kidneys and can result in kidney failure and death. Symptoms include muscle pain and weakness, fever, nausea and dark urine.
